lesson plan | formal & informal English

target audience: (young) adult EFL/ESL learners at CEFR B2/C1 level

objectives:

  • to raise Ss’ awareness of the differences between formal and informal English
  • to present/review and practice some formal vocabulary
  • to introduce Ss to usage labels in learners’ dictionaries

Hi there! 👨🏻‍🏫

I've been a teacher for long enough to know that even advanced students are not quite aware sometimes of the differences between formal and informal English. To counter this, I designed this lesson plan to help raise learners' awareness of register variation in English while exploring some vocabulary and developing dictionary training skills. The inspiration for this lesson came from the following Instagram posts:

Here are some possible scenarios where this lesson might come in handy:

👉 You're teaching exam prep classes (e.g., B2 First/FCE, C1 Advanced/CAE, C2 Proficiency/CPE, IELTS, or TOEFL) and you're dealing with students who keep turning in written work that doesn't meet the standards of formal academic English.

👉 You're teaching a regular upper-intermediate/advanced EFL/ESL/EAP program that requires students to turn in formal written assignments but you feel they need more assistance than what your coursebook gives them.

👉 You're teaching adults learning Business English and you realize they are not using appropriately formal English.

You're free to edit the materials however you like and, needless to say, feedback is always welcome! ;)
