lesson plan | challenging assumptions #AssumeThatICan
target audience: (young) adult EFL/ESL learners at an upper-intermediate (CEFR B2) level
objective:
to provide Ss with speaking practice around the topic of assumptions
Hi there! 👨🏻🏫
Have you ever made false assumptions about someone? Similarly, have people ever made false assumptions about you? In what ways can assumptions be harmful?
These are some of the questions in which students engage in this conversation lesson, which is inspired by the 2024 campaign of the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, and aims to raise awareness about the potential repercussions of negative assumptions towards individuals with Down syndrome, which can often manifest as self-fulfilling prophecies.
The lesson provides students with ample opportunities for discussion and reflection, culminating in an activity where they are tasked with designing a social media campaign focused on raising awareness of negative stereotypes affecting a marginalized community in their context.
