lesson plan | CEFR B2 linkers (1)

target audience: (young) adult EFL/ESL learners at an upper-intermediate (CEFR B2) level

objective:

  • to provide step-by-step practice of linkers used for sequencing, adding, illustrating, and describing cause and effect

materials: teacher's notes,
student’s worksheet, and slides

Hi there! 👨🏻‍🏫

It's no surprise that writing is a skill that many of our students struggle with. In particular, one difficulty many students have is related to connecting their ideas smoothly. To help upper-intermediate (B2) students perfect their use of linking devices, I designed two "writing workshops."

The idea for doing this came from this Instagram post:

Though well-meaning, I sometimes wonder if posts like this really help learners as they fail to provide contextualized examples that actually teach students how to use these words and phrases correctly. (And, of course, a similar point could be made about coursebooks as similar lists can also be found in many of the teaching materials that we use!)

To help students learn how to use these linkers in a step-by-step fashion, I've broken the list down into two lessons. The first one addresses linkers used for adding, sequencing, illustrating, and describing cause and effect. (Click here for the second post in this series.)

You're free to edit the materials however you like and, needless to say, feedback is always welcome! ;)
